Overseas students

APPLICATION FOR ENTRY FOR STUDY

IMPORTANT NOTES

​

  1. All students without the right of abode/right to land in Hong Kong MUST apply for a student visa for the purpose of education in Hong Kong. Students in Visitor status (whether holding a travel visa or travel endorsement) participating in any classes, tutorials and other academic-related activities will be regarded as illegal. It is the responsibility of individual students to make appropriate visa arrangements before they come to Hong Kong. 
     

  2. If you have a full-time Firm Offer and wish to apply for a student visa directly with the Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD), you may select "Self-apply" Route after you have submitted your applicant information at the HKU visa application system. In this case, the Admissions Office would only provide the online sponsorship letter that is required by ImmD. You will have to communicate and keep track of the approval progress with ImmD directly, pay any additional fees and collect the visa permit on your own upon the visa approval. ​

    *Application via the Hong Kong Immigration Department online platform is not applicable for students pursuing part-time studies.
     

  3. ​If you are holding a Chinese passport with permanent residency in another country, you may apply as an overseas student. Please select “Mainland (Overseas)” during the registration process at the HKU visa system.
     

  4. Students who would study in an Exchange, Summer or Short-Term Visiting programme and is holding a Chinese passport currently residing in an overseas country may apply for a student visa as an overseas student and enter Hong Kong directly from that residing country. They should also prove to have the strength to return to that residing country from Hong Kong. Full-time degree students must return to the Mainland and use the “Exit-entry Permit” as their travel document for studying in Hong Kong here.                                                                                                                                                                                                ​

  5. If you are currently in Hong Kong on another visa issued by the HK Immigration Department, the Department (Extension Section) will contact you directly once your new student visa is approved. Please note that you may need to leave and re-enter Hong Kong using the new student visa, at the Immigration Department's discretion.                                                                                                                                                                                  

  6. Where a document is not in English or Chinese (especially the financial statement), a certified true translation in Chinese or English is must be accompanied.                                                                                                                                                                                 ​

LIST OF DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

  1. A completed ID 995A form - Download Form - Sample Form

  2. A copy of your complete set of offer of admission

  3. A copy of your Passport

  4. Copies of financial proofs (to demonstrate that you have adequate means to finance your stay in HK) (e.g. latest bank statements in English / Chinese, award letter(s) of financial aid or scholarship, etc.)

  5. A signed financial sponsor's supporting letter (If you have a financial sponsor) - Download Form

  6. A copy of the passport of your financial sponsor (If you have a financial sponsor)

  7. A consent letter signed by both your parent and the guardian (who is your parent’s relative / friend in Hong Kong or the University), with a copy of your parent's passport (and guardian's HKID copy, if any) (If you are under the age of 18) - Download Form (Sample)

  8. Accommodation arrangement covering your study in HK. It can be HKU residential hall booking or confirmation of hotel booking which shows the guest(s) name and period of stay. (If you are under the age of 18 and pursuing summer programme)

  9. A signed declaration of your entry arrangement for part-time studies in HK (If you are pursuing part-time study) - Download Form

  10. A full-year class timetable (If you are pursuing part-time study)

11. Faculty/Department Confirmation Sheet on Student Status (For New Entry Visa/Visa Renewal students) - Download Form   

​• Please complete Part 1 and send it to your Faculty/Department to endorse Part 2**If you are a HKU student and will start another programme in the new academic year (e.g. an undergraduate student taking a master programme in the new academic year), this document is NOT required**​

14. Current Visa/Permit Label and the Latest Landing Slip

If you are applying as a Chinese passport currently residing in an overseas (Mainland (living overseas)):

15. Copy of your residence permit or visa for staying in your current residing country

16. Copy of your student card and the latest academic transcripts

  • If you do not have a student card, please upload a statement indicating that you do not have a student card, and combine it with the certificate of enrolment and the transcript into a file onto the system for our checking.

17. A signed explanation letter of your itinerary

  • Include reasons of your inability to return to China for applying an exit endorsement on your Exit-entry Permit and, elaboration of your travel plan, including your tentative departure port and date, use of your Chinese passport as your travel document for studying in HK and your departure destination (e.g. country of your home school) after completion of studies in HK
